Mamuju, Sulbarkita.com - Construction of the Manakarra Tower by the Mamuju Regency government, West Sulawesi, has received criticism from some residents. According to the General Chairman of the Islamic Student Association (HMI) Branch of Manakarra, Sopliadi, the government should think of the principle of benefits in issuing policies. "The construction of the tower should not need to be a priority," he told Sulbarkita.com via telephone, July 16, 2019.
According to Sopliadi, the government should focus on development that is more touching the needs of the community, such as road infrastructure. "There are still many areas that need attention, for example, access roads to the damaged Tommo Village and Leling Village," he said.

One resident of Bonehau Village, Bonehau Subdistrict, Asri Hamid, 30 years old, also did not agree with the plan for the construction of the Manakarra Tower. He called the project a waste of budget and not substantial. Rather than taking care of a lighthouse project like that, Asri claimed that citizens like him needed more repairs to public facilities that could boost the economy.
In terms of infrastructure alone, the Mamuju Regency government still has a lot of homework. One of them is to improve the access road of Bonehau to Kalumpang Subdistrict, which is not suitable for use. The road segment was last paved in the period of Mamab Almalik Regent Pababari aka almost 20 years ago. "If it rains, the road will be flooded with mud mixed with water," he said.
Residents of Sodoang Village, Kalukku District, Hamzah Ali Topan, 23 years old, were very sad to see the road conditions in the eastern part of Mamuju. He said, the residents even stopped the trip if they happened to be on the Bonehau-Kalumpang road when it rained. Because the mud is thick, it is feared that it can harm motorists.
The Head of the Culture and Tourism Agency (Disbudpar) of Mamuju Regency, Usdi, said that his party built the 70-meter-high Manakarra Tower to attract tourists to Mamuju. It will directly and continuously increase revenue in the tourism sector. "Bali and Yogyakarta are developing because of the famous tourist objects and many tourists," Usdi said to Sulbarkita.com, Wednesday, July 17, 2019.
He also believes that languishing will become the icon of Mamuju. If that happens, local residents can use it to earn money. For example by opening food stalls, selling, and so on. "There must be criticism, but what is more important is how to make people aware of the economic opportunities of the tower," Usdi said.
The tower, named Manakarra Tower, is planned to begin construction this year. The location is in the former old office of the Regional People's Representative Council (DPRD) of Mamuju Regency, Jalan Ahmad Yani, Binanga Village, Mamuju District.
Based on data from the Mamuju Regency Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), the number of foreign tourists from 2015 to 2017 has increased. In 2015, the number of foreign tourists was 9 people, following in 2016 as many as 14 people, while 2017 as many as 61 tourists.
