Mamuju, Sulbarkita.com - The Central Statistics Agency of West Sulawesi recorded an economic contraction that occurred in the second quarter of 2020 in West Sulawesi by 0.78 percent. From the expenditure side, the lowest contraction occurred in the Household Consumption Expenditure component by 0.74 percent.

"Contraction occurred when compared to the same quarter in 2019 (y-on-y) contracted by 0.78 percent," wrote BPS in a press release.

The contraction that occurred in the West Sulawesi economy was in line with the national condition which recorded a decline of 5.32 percent (y-on-y) when compared to the second quarter of 2019. The transportation and warehousing business sectors that experienced the most contraction at the national level were 30.84 percent.

According to BPS, the Covid-19 pandemic has been the source of national economic shocks. "Various policies carried out to suppress the spread of Covid-19, such as closing schools and several business activities, large-scale social restrictions, and even lockdowns resulted in a decrease in the level of consumption and investment," BPS wrote in the Indonesian Economic Growth notes for the second quarter of 2020.

However, what is interesting in West Sulawesi is that in terms of business fields, the highest growth is in the information and communication business sector at 5.30 percent. In fact, cumulatively in the I-II 2020 quarter, the Information and Communication field was 7.01 percent. "The cumulative economic growth in the first and second quarters when compared to the same conditions in 2019 (c-to-c) reached 2.00 percent."
