Mamuju, Sulbarkita.com - Karampuang Island is one of the destinations that has high tourism potential in Karampuang Village, Mamuju District, Mamuju Regency, West Sulawesi. On the island, which is three kilometers from Mamuju beach, beautiful sunsets, white sand, and the underwater world that is still authentic is a tremendous attraction.

Unfortunately, the island's tourism potential, which can be reached in 15 minutes by boat from Mamuju, has not been fully explored by the local government. Even though it is believed to be able to compete with other marine tourism destinations that are quite loved in Sulawesi, for example Samalona Island in Makassar and Takabonerate in Selayar.

"Quoting a visitor's term, this island is a hidden pearl and hidden by other pearls," said the village head of Karampuang Hasdiah, "These pearls are not shiny yet because they have not been polished and sharpened properly."

Hasdiah conveyed this statement in front of the Deputy Governor of West Sulawesi, Enny Anggraeny Anwar and the Regent of Mamuju Habsi Wahid, while giving a speech at the workshop on Government Internal Control Systems (SPIP) and Integrated Program Planning for Vertical Agencies at his office Jalan Abdul Malik Pattana Endeng, Mamuju, Tuesday, December 5. 2018.

One proof that Karampuang Island has not yet explored its tourism potential, Hasdiah admitted that the means of transportation to the island, which is 6 square kilometers wide, is still traditional. Namely in the form of boats belonging to residents that are rented to local people and tourists who want to travel there.

Even if you want to go there, the ship owner must be found first. "Usually the residents call the boat owner. The rent is Rp. 10 thousand for local residents while for visitors it is Rp. 15 thousand to Rp. 20 thousand, "he told Sulbarkita.com by telephone after the event.

The facilities on the island with a population of 2,937 are far from luxurious. For example, residents' substations that are rented out for tourists to rest for Rp. 30 thousand a day. Meanwhile, the residents' houses were transformed into lodgings with rents of IDR 150 thousand per night.

Sweet Promises for Island Development

Hearing Hasdiah's statement, Deputy Governor of West Sulawesi Enny Anggraeny Anwar challenged the Regent of Mamuju, Habsi Wahid, to "collaborate" to build Karampuang Island. "Karampuang Island already needs to be built because it is starting to be recognized by the national and international community," said Enny.

According to the wife of the former governor of the two periods, Anwar Adnan Saleh, making Karampuang Island a leading tourist destination has become a program for the West Sulawesi Provincial Government. Even the island was proclaimed as Smiling Island or the island of smiles at the 14th birthday celebration of West Sulawesi in September 2018. However, he hopes the Mamuju local government will intervene as the owner of the territorial area of Karampuang Island. "I hope this project is sustainable," he said.

Mamuju Regent Habsi Wahid said he was ready to work with the West Sulawesi Provincial Government to build Karampuang Island. According to the NasDem politician, development will begin by arranging infrastructure such as the existing transportation facilities on the island. "We also had the idea of making roads for cross-country cyclists," he said.

Habsi also promised to build monumental infrastructure such as the traditional houses of each district, "So that Karampuang will truly become a promising destination for local and foreign tourists," he said. Unfortunately it is not yet known when the construction will be carried out because it is still under study.
