Yogyakarta, Sulbarkita.com — Mus'ad, a visual artist from West Sulawesi, created a painting featuring the tradition of mutual cooperation in Mandar called Pappalenggu Boyang or Paakke Boyang. The painting, measuring 100x85 cm, was specially made to celebrate Indonesia's independence day in Yogyakarta, where Mus'ad now lives. "The painting entitled 'Sibali Parriq Maakke Boyang' was worked on in Yogyakarta from 15 until the peak of its completion on Monday 17 August," said the man who is familiarly called A'ad Mandar.
According to A'ad Mandar, the Pappalenggu Boyang or Paakke Boyang tradition is a ritual to move the Mandar tribe's house by being raised jointly by the community. Not only men, women are also involved as encouragement and preparing meals.
This tradition has been carried out from generation to generation in West Sulawesi as a symbol of mutual cooperation. Usually performed after Friday prayers. However, this tradition is starting to be eroded by the times because most of the residents of West Sulawesi are no longer houses on stilts, but semi-permanent.
"This is also my effort to preserve the Mandar culture which is now only practiced in a few areas in West Sulawesi," said the alumni of the Tarbiyah Faculty of UIN Sunan Kalijaga, Yogyakarta, who graduated in 2019.
A'ad Mandar said that the slogan in the Pappalenggu Boyang tradition is also very suitable to reflect the condition of Indonesia which is still worsening since the Covid-19 outbreak. Because through this painting, he invites people to come back together and rise from this adversity. "Like the tradition of moving houses, we as a nation must be united, both in our work and in our own ways," he said.
A'ad Mandar added that currently there are hardly any works such as paintings that focus on cultural locality in West Sulawesi. Therefore, the artist who has exhibited his paintings both in Yogyakarta and at the national level is determined to raise many cultural themes from Sulbar in his paintings.
"I will also display this painting at the National Painting Exhibition Akbar 1 which will take place on October 2-9 in Sidoarjo (East Java)," said the artist who was born in Pakkamisang, Padang Timur Village, Campalagian, Polman in 1997.
